I'm attempting to do my first video editing. Shot 2+ hours of minidv and want to do fairly minimal editing and write DVDRs. Just want to cut out a few minutes here and there, insert a couple of 6 second long videos. If I can, maybe I'll overlay a little audio, if not no biggie.

I have Nero 6 Ultra's Nero Vision Express 2.0, but I'm finding it aggravatingly opaque. When I tried to cut out 3-4 minutes in the middle of a 55 minutes AVI, I just didn't get the paradigm. Poor dumb me. I tried printing out one of the evidently more useful PDFs that Nero has online about video editing, but for some crazy reason my HP4M printer won't print it. So, what to do?

I have a couple of versions of Ulead VideoStudio and think I may find that understandable. I got the Version 6 SE DVD with my Winfast TV2000 Deluxe TV card, and I got Version 5 DV with my firewire card. Don't know which to try. Suggestions very very welcome!

Some advice for you:

1) Take a look at Pinnacle Studio. I have been using it for years and even learned a new trick last week to do video picture in picture with Studio 8.

2) Learn to use to search function for this board; there is a lot of useful information already out there.

I user virtualdub for basic video editing, it has some good filters, but it can only save to avi. It suits my post-processing needs for TV capture. If you didn't know about it, check it out at www.virtualdub.com

Yes, thanks. I was at their website today and read the homepage pretty carefully. The creator initially did it in college to help him with some small projects and it's continued to grow. As a programmer (databases) I can relate. The author subtitles it: "Proof that I had too much free time in college". It's freeware, near as I can make out, at least as it applies to me. If I can get what I want as an AVI, I think I can use Nero VideoExpress 2.0 to compress it and burn to DVD. Will have a look at the other suggestions. Thanks to everybody. Not sure I want to buy any more software right now, but will see if I can get along with what I have and any freeware (such as VirtualDub).
