I've got a bunch of vids recorded from a vcr tape that need sharpening. What's a program that will do this? Free is preferred.

There's Cinelerra. It's a professional package, but GNU/Linux only. I don't do video editing, so I have no experience or comment, but if it's something valuable enough to consider, a thumb drive install of GNU/Linux would be a viable way of using it.

Define "sharpening" more precisely. Do you have static? Lines?

If you really mean sharpening, there are a number of AviSynth filters that will do that. Here's a couple that generally look good:

It's vcr recordings, so the video is as sharp as drawings are for a 5 year old's sidewalk drawings in chalk. If I were in photoshop, I'd use the unsharpen mask...something like that.

I haven't used avisynth for about 10 years and remember little about it. What front end do people use with it and scripts for it?

That looks quite capable...and intimidating. I wonder what the learning curve for something like that would be...if it would be a shaped like a curve at all for me. :p I might have to give it a shot, it looks pretty awesome.

Lightworks might be able to do something for you. They have a paid version, and a reduced function free version. I'm just DuckDuckGoing around because the question interested me.

Edit:
and Avidemux

You rock (as usual). Those are some awesome suggestions. Lightworks looks another professional video machine yet palatable and avidemux has simplicity yet with contrast and sharpness options.

I will update if/when I learn anything from them.
