Video editing software for Windows 8

Hey crew,

I'm looking for a simple, basic, and free video editing software that I can use with Win 8 (or 7 on another machine). The files I'm working with are .wmv and I just need to splice out a few sections of a ten minute video. Any pointers?

I've used avidemux. I'm a complete novice but wanted to cut a couple of short avi files up and it was really easy to use (and free). I'm sure the experts will check in later with more options:

It's free, it's open source, and it's powerful. It's really hard to top Avidemux
