At school we just started working on editing some projects we did, a film Noir actually, and I liked the Imac's with the Imovie's for the purpose I was using it for. It was simple, easy, and crashed alot. Also it had the features I was looking for without many extras. I am looking into getting this for myself at home, mainly because of the Imac's instability and long rendering times for effects like Black and White. I need suggestions for some moderately cheap (hopefully under $200) that will have all of the features of Imovie and then some. I also need to look into being able to input from and output to a vcr.

Are you looking for video capture hardware, or are talking about video editing softare?

If you are talking about hardware, buy a ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon. It is simple to use, has great video capture quality, good gaming, has video out for the VCR or TV, and has a lot of great software included.

They run about $210.00 on Anandtech for a retail version.

I bought mine from Hawk, and I would recommend him if you want one.

I am actually looking for both hardware and software, but today after buying an Athlon 850, another 256 Megs of ram (makes 384) and a 30 Gig IBM 75GXP, I downloaded Adove Premiere. It is really the best thing I have found yet. I will really have to save my money to buy it though, %600!
 
Ulead Video Studio will do the software side of what you want. For hardware, the DC10 is fine. If you want to do tv caps, try the Hauppage wintv 401. It's cheap, and has the ability to use software codecs. Some cards are limited to hardware mjpeg.
