video editing machine

From what I hear, Intels are probably better for video editing. Also, if you want to stick with those parts, you can save a few bucks here and there by shopping around. You can get the samr processor with free second day from ZZF: Text

Edit: Also, there's a thread on memory performance on A64's. You won't see a huge difference by buying such high end RAM. Maybe get 2 gigs of value RAM instead or use the difference to get a nice video card; I don't do much video editing so I can't recommend a good card for this purpose though.

Edit again: Never mind, misread. 😱

i know...thats kinda why i was thinking of getting 1.5gb instead of 2...would i be able to tell a difference enough to justify the added expense?

Toledo/Italy/Denmark upgrade path > P4 ~%5 advantage in encoding

I'd get a single opteron board, and then upgrade to dual core this autumn.

Nix raptor RAID0. The cash is better spent elsewhere on an encoding machine.

i thought the raid0 would help with all the i/o operations and swapping going on...

will a single opteron perform as well as a p4 3.0?

bump for another question

Encoding is usually CPU limited. Video editing however makes use of more IOps, but for anything that requires that many IOps you should be considering dual opteron w/ SCSI. But the main reason I said that is because a single Raptor 74 is faster.

I would still reccomend a single nF4/nFP based A64, because dual core chips are coming Autumn, and will work just fine, and require a simple bios update to be recognized properly.

I recently built a NLE (Non-Linear Edit) machine for a friend of mine with the following specs

CPU: Intel P4 3.2GHz
M/B: Asus P4C800E-Deluxe
RAM: 2 x 1GB Geil P3200 Value RAM
HDD: 3 x 200GB Maxtor SATA + 1 x 80GB Maxtor PATA
GFX: GF 5200TD AGP (Dual Head)
PSU: Enermax Noisetaker 465W

Plus a Matrox RTX.100 Video processor was installed for real-time rendering

The Asus board was selected as, at the time, it was the highest spec board that was certified to work with the RTX.100. If I was to build a similar system today, I'd probably use something like the ASUS P5AD2 Premium. The Maxtor SATA drives have all been replaced in the six months since I built the system as they would intermittently not be detected during POST (possibly a compatibility problem as one of them is in my system now and has been absolutely fine).

The reason for the 3 drives, Matrox recommend that you have seperate drives for capture, editing and export. I don't believe there are any significant benefits in a RAID setup in this case.

As far as the RAM goes, quantity beats speed. It won't hurt at all to buy high spec memory but get as much as you can afford.

Have a look Here for some interesting/useful info.

That Matrox RT.X100 gives me a chub! 😀 Doing nothing more involved than capturing and converting home movies and DVR stuff though, I am happy with my Plextor ConvertX

* NF4 is very new...
* Intel chipsets are tried & true for VE...
* Send your "friends dad" to Dell...

by this i mean offence to dell.... clones are better! Easier to fix (if needed), cheaper, and much easier to upgrade.

If "clones" offer the same tech support as Dell, I say go with them. 😉

I wouldn't suggest buying a system from any of the little computer shops white box builders in my area on a bet! Overpriced, poorly spec'd with the cheapest parts if the customer doesn't know enough about the hardware to custom spec it, and they take forever to service and return the system. Then overcharge for labor and parts to boot because low volume means they need to make it up somewhere or go under. They treat Business better, but get very little action in that area from what I gather. Most aren't authorized service centers for any OEM either.
