Hi all,
I am currently gathering some information on a good video editing + games system, I am unable to go for the imacs as the costs are high. I would like to know your opinion of the selection below. If you own any of these components or have seen any of these in action please would you write what you think about them. Please keep in mind I don't really want to spend that much on the computer. I basically just want to know if the system will be a great video editing system and game system? Here is the system....

- Intel Pentium 4, 2.8GHz 800MHz FSB
-Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 Pro (hyperthreading)
-2x 512 PC3200 ram (dual channel)
-Western Digital 120 Gb HDD 7200rpm, 8mb cache
- LG Flatron T910B 19inch screen (max resolution: 2048x1536 @ 61hz) .25 dot pitch
-Pioneer 16x DVD Rom
-Lite-on 52x32x52 CDRW
-Asus ti4200 v9280 128mb video suite card
-Altec Lansing 221 Speakers

How would this system above weigh up against the following system in gaming and video editing. The system is AMD 1.8GHz, 512mb ram, mx440 video card

Your new system should be a pretty hefty performance increase. here is a performance comparison in gaming(made by yours truly)

New system: ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Old System: |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

This is mostly due to the video you have selected.

If I were you i would get a P4 2.4C and upgrade the mobo with maybe something in the 875P range and if you have the cash get 2x 512 PC3700 or something like that if you plan to OC

Instead get a 2.4C. Use the $100 you'll save from that and get a 9800np (or fx5900nu if you prefer nvidia). You might also want to get some better ram if you want to overclock and still keep it at a 1:1 ratio. It should be quite a bit better than your old rig for those applications.

^like he said. much more powerful than old rig, beef up the vid card.

have you thought about sound card? integrated is ok, but I always like the extra jacks that come on th cards, get that surround sound for your games and movies.

Be aware that several factors can cause "interference" in the audio when using onboard audio. My wife found that her onboard audio caused a buzzing sound when capturing with Camtasia, and dropping in a Live Value solved her problem. We didn't do any troubleshooting, such as nearby electrical devices, lousy power cables, dirty power, etc...but any one of these issues can present a problem, depending on the system itself and the surrounding environment.

The MX440 is rather lame. The card you chose seems pretty good from at least one review I read. I personally don't trust ATI drivers (long history). I was able to capture, edit/mix and encode my sister's wedding video (from VHS-C) on a Ti200 Personal Cinema, and it kicked just fine. It's starting to show its age in games, and I may use it to create a pseudo-TIVO box in my HT a few months from now...but it's OK for today.

The rest of you system looks like it should handle video editing just fine.

OC is a bad idea for video editing stability is key.

More precisely, stability is key for every app or game you run on a computer. For example, Prime95 wouldn't run for more than a few minutes, and there were lots of artifacting in UT, on my 1.6A when clocked to 2.4. I had to back it down to 2.24. However, after installing The Card Cooler so that I could safely overclock my video card, I had the unexpected pleasure to discover the additional air flow benefitted my CPU as well, and I've been running at 2.4 24/7 since January...and last month I used Vegas Video 3.0 to create a wedding video of my sister's wedding,which turned out quite well.

In other words, be sure that if you OC, that the system is stable before getting into video editing. The extra clock cycles will be of a benefit when encoding.

If it was me;
I`d just build a kick a$$ gaming rig, then;
Add a AIW card (prob 9800AIW), and a Audigy2 Platinum.
They if the money was there, make the HD space to 80gb+ and the ram to 512mb+

If u're gonna be doing video-editing, I'd suggest getting a second hard drive at the least. If u can afford one, get a raptor

For gaming, get a 9600 or better

I will probably upgrade some of the stuff in here later on and drop the old stuff in my old computer. The things I will probably upgrade the following in the future: buy a radeon 9700 pro video card, buy another hard drive and raid them (2x 120gb- and thats only if I will need it), buy an audigy 2 sound card, buy some decent speakers and that should be about it. I would just like to know if I would need more ram in future to do video editing?

HMMMMM!!! He can OC and obtain stability !!! I run oc'd and do tons of video editing and encoding and I have no issues...If you know what you are doing the system can be as stable as for any other app...

And we will obey your every word... (end of sarcasm)

I'll also jump on the slower CPU\better video card bandwagon. Look at an AIW9700 Pro cheaper than the 9800 (don't know by how much, might not be worth the downgrade) but still has blazing performance. I'd spring for a Raptor as a boot drive (or anything else that can hold your normal files) and a huge drive dedicated to video editing\dumping on its own IDE channel or a SATAN... err I mean SATA model.

That is a good point to drop the cpu and put in a better video card. I will just hold on to the cpu and later down the track will buy a better video card and the ti4200 can be put in my old 866Mhz pentium 3. I would like to know how smooth the system will run games and video editing

Thank you for all your help
