Video Editing, 7,200 RPM Drive

I do video editing on a MacBook Pro 13" using Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro. I'm gonna get an external 7,200 Firewire, but there'll be times when I don't have my external with me. I've done OK with the stock 5,400 HDD for most editing, but most video software suggests you use a 7,200 RPM drive for editing. I was gonna upgrade this drive with a WD and my choices seem to be a 500GB 5,400 or a 320GB 7,200. How realistic is the 7,200 recommended requirement for video editing? My laptop hasn't hiccuped yet, but I'm wondering as I start to get better with the software and do heavy editing if the 7,200 really starts to become necessary.

Anyone in the field got some pro advice for a beginner?

You must be doing some really light editing.. once you get past a couple video/audio layers, you need a RAID setup to keep up. I'd recommend using eSATA bare minimum if you're doing an external drive. 7200rpm drives at minimum..
