Video Distortion

Hi everyone,

I'm really new and not well versed on hardware or software at all. This weekend, my computer developed a problem and I don't know how to fix it. I want to learn, though.

Basically what happened was that the screen image would become distorted and the distortion seemed to be defined in columns. At first, a reboot would resolve the problem. I didn't know what it was so I did the simple things like run a virus check, spybot, defrag, adjusted my video settings a bit lower resolution, etc.

The problem cropped up a lot when I was playing WoW, so I thought I'd screwed up the setting somehow. But, soon, the problem spilled over into when I was running Excel and other desktops. Shortly after that, the distortion was happening even in startup at the DOS prompt screen, and spills into the Windows XP bootup. By the time the desktop comes up, I can barely make out the cursor and can't seem to interact with any of the icons. A minute or two after that, the monitor shuts down into power save mode.

I had an older monitor that I swapped out. I got the same visual distortion as with the original monitor so I kinda ruled out a monitor problem.

I've used compressed air to clean out the inside of the tower again and even rechecked all the connections. For the life of me, I don't know what to do next to get it fixed. Can anyone give any advice?

First, welcome to the Forums !

Is this a home built system or a store package?

I don't know if I'll be able to help, but some more information may help others in assisting you such as Video Card make & model, Motherboard (if home built) and so forth.

To me, right off it sounds like it could be corrupt video drivers, a Video card going bad, or possibly a BIOS setting.
