Video display goes black randomly - sorta

I have the computer listed in my sig... and it has run fine since march. No problems whatsoever.... except for video.
5 years ago, I bought the original system.. AthlonXP1800, Geforce5500, 512mb ram... etc.... 19" AOC CRT Monitor.

The 19" AOC had lasted 4 years, before it started making a "pop" noise and changed resolutions all the time.. from 1024x768 to 800x600 and back again constantly. So being I needed a new monitor fairly quickly.. and being I have two family members with good experiences with KDS... I went to Walmart and bought a KDS 17" LCD
http://www.kdsusa.com/K717s.asp

This worked perfectly, no problems for 5months, then it started to do something strange.. it would dim the screen(adjust your brightness maybe 40points to see the effect) and make the screen fuzzy at random times... Once it got dim/fuzzy, it would not clear up without a power cycle. After a few days of the dim/fuzzy, it started to also just go black at random times, but the monitor LED was still green. Once black, power cycles of the monitor(flip button on/off) would restore video for 3-5 seconds, then it would either return to dim/fuzzy or go black. Leaving the monitor off for 15min-1hr would result in display being restored once turning it back on, and I could surf/play for 15min-8hrs before it would usually do it again. Power cycling always gave it 3-5 seconds of display before it went dim/fuzzy or black. I tested this LCD on my father's computer right after it started happening, different room, same cables though, different computer.. Same result...
This was enough to have me bother KDS for a RMA, and I received a refurb/replacement in the mail a little while later.

/install refurb/replace, /pack old back in box and send to them.
Refurb running great for 5 months..
Two days ago I was surfing and... bam.. black screen... mouse movement/keyboard input does nothing.. I can shutdown the computer or do any task, just no video display... so I power cycle the monitor and display comes up for 3~sec then goes away. I also noted that display vanishes in CMOS after 3seconds, not just Windows. Thus making me think its hardware.

I have already thought about and will probably grab a NEC or Viewsonic 19" to replace this one, but it is a decent amount of money to spend.
I wondered if anyone had ideas as to what this could be.

The monitor would normally give a blue and red "no signal" box when going into power saving mode and the LED would turn orange. Neither of those happen in this case.. it just goes black.. and LED stays green, and computer stays running. Power cycling 100% restores the display for 3seconds then it goes black again.. everytime... no matter what.. (this makes me think its not bent pins/loose connection.. .but I dont know).

It has been kinda good and hasn't done it too often, but it just started, so it will probably get worse. It seems to be doing it this time when turning it on, or coming out of power saving mostly. At that point it will go black and it can't be remedied without letting it sit for 15min off.

Environmental Variables:
Wood paneled room with short hair indoor/outdoor carpet..
Computer and monitor are on a wooden desk, with 12" clearance to the wall.
All devices(speakers/computer/monitor) are plugged into an APC surge protector.
House is 80years old
The lights dim for a split second when the heat/cold comes on in the house... possibly short to the monitor? grasping at anything I guess here...
The room is pretty dusty, but isn't "caked" with dust... I guess the monitor could be getting hot, but the computer has always ran fine and never had heat issues that I know of. I clean it every two weeks or so.

Is there anything I could be doing or causing(enviromental variables above) that would shorten a LCD monitor's lifespan to 6months or is this just a junk monitor?

A little more info:
Once it enters "black mode", anything that forces the monitor to rewrite its entire screen will get display back for 3 seconds.. but nothing causes it to stick... this includes...
changing resolutions
Rebooting the computer(the BIOS/WIndows XP loading screen gets display at each thing..but if it pauses too long, it will go black... and goes black in CMOS)
Power Cycling the monitor

The Geforce6600 seems to have no problems that I can tell.
I normally play a MMORPG, and just surf/do normal computer tasks.
At the moment I run on 1024x768 because I don't really like 1280x1024 yet.. but will have to get used to it soon.

Would appreciate any ideas on:
What is actually causing the monitor to go into black mode?
Will a Viewsonic/NEC/AOC/etc... monitor replacement work better/last longer?
Is there anything I could be doing to shorten the lifespan to 5months?
Any other helpful ideas?
