VIDEO DIED!

So I just put my old video card (which worked fine last time I checked, in a different computer) into my new server, Dell SC240.

I've been futzing with it for over two hours, and I just can't get it to work. Originally, I wanted to run dual outputs on the onboard, and the vga out of the card, but now i'd settle for just getting this card working.

When I boot normally, I get seemingly random patterns on the screen, and that's it. The computer seems to be working fine other than that.

When I boot (via F8) to "VGA Mode only", everything seems to work. I can even go and change to resolution to 1024 or even 1280. From Display properties however, it only shows one monitor (at one point it was showing 2, and even 3 monitors -- VGA on card, svideo on card, and vga onboard).

Any ideas or suggestions? I'd really like to get the card working properly.

OK, here's the deal after some more testing:

If i set the onboard video to the primary adapter in the BIOS, everything works fine, with one monitor on the onboard, and one on the PCI nvidia card. However, when I set the PCI card to the primary card in the BIOS, everything is NOT fine. I get to the login screen with the monitor on the PCI card on, but the login window doesn't show up. The other monitor is off. After typing in my password to an invisible window, it logs in and gives me garbage on the PCI monitor. The other one is STILL off.

any ideas at all? what could be causing this?
