I've had this problem on my system for a while.. originally on my gf4 ti-4600 if i ran the video speed at anything but safe clockspeed settings, i could expect a lockup/freeze while playing. This usually happened on games like farcry / painkiller and other 2004 titles that liked to use a lot of memory.
Well now its august, and i just got my geforce 6800 ultra. and the problem is back again. Of course, im not going to underclock my card to be stable.. and i'm pretty sure its not the video card anymore (problem would've gone away, right?)
I've got a P4 3.0ghz (800fsb) on the Abit IS7-G. I've got 4x 256mb Kingston HyperX pc3200 ddr (dont recal CAS timings). Computer is rock solid in windows, but gets shakey when i put up the resolution in games like far cry, doom 3, ut2k4. (UT2k4 to a lesser extent - sometimes "unsticks" itself)
The one thing i noticed was the northbridge chipset cooler is shot.. it whiirs like its operating on borrowed time, and sometimes just stops altogether. Would this have any effect?
Right now my theories are looking towards the memory bus .. would make sense since the lockups are occurring when the system is under intensive memory usage load.
One last note: after the last lockup i had i checked the temperature on the CPu, it was at 138 f. I've go a thermaltake volcano.
Any input, suggestions, questions, comments, etc highly appreciated. I'd really like to get this problem tackled before college starts up again
