I didn't get much response in the Hardware forum, thought posting here might help - this is a rehash:

Problem with all video files, they can be played just fine - no hiccuping or stopping, but the video images are extremely coarse and washed-out looking.

This problem is with any video file I have. Pictures can be viewed fine, and I play all the latest games with good frame rates, odd, though, that the start-up videos for these games play fine. I have the latest video card drivers. The problem extends to WMP, VideoLAN (what I usually use), and the Creative media player. I have uninstalled all of the codec packs that I had (Divx, etc) and have not tried to reinstall them.

The problem seems obviously due to some conflict with multiple codecs, I guess, but I don't know how to look for these and when or how to try and reinstall them.

Specs: 3500+, 6800 GT, 2GB DDR 400, XP sp2, Audigy 2

Screenshot of installed codecs

I have been using a utility called codec sniper which reveals a whole lot more than what are on the list I posted above.

What is interesting is the Divx pack I UNinstalled is still listed on the above screenie.

I saw another post that Ad-aware can cause these kind of issues to come up, but I tried to un-quarantine the last several months worth and nothing changed.

Your right it sounds like a codec problem.

Uninstall all previous codecs and install a codec pack.
I like the K-Lite codec pack it will uninstall previous versions and install all the latest ones.

Unfortunately, that's a driver issue that's been around since this summer.

From what i understood, the latest drivers from nVidia were fixed, but i guess they weren't.

You have to go into video overlay settings & change some stuff, & it'll revert to normal if you're lucky.
I forget the exact fix, & search isn't helping me.

You could install some of the old nVidia drivers (like before the 72.xx ones), & that'll fix it.

Hopefully someone comes along with the fix.

Worst case scenio: throw the 6800GT out & get an X800XL ;)
At least ATi tends to adress driver issues a bit quicker...

I thought so too, but he claims he has the latest.

I found the "fix" (which doesn't work for everyone either):

Access the Color Correction screen in your display properties, select "Overlay" in the drop-down box beneath "Apply color changes to:" and then change the color profile from "Standard mode" to "Advanced mode."

You guys just plain rock.

n7, the fix worked like a charm.

And HDTV man, I didn't have the "latest" drivers. Sorry for the bad information.

I'll, uh, be downloading 78.01 now......

The 81.84 drivers doesn't have that problem. In fact, the 78.xx driver that I replaced didn't have that problem too. Also, if you use VMR9 as your output rather than overlay, you wouldn't have that problem at all even with the older drivers.

I have accepted the fact that you all function on a higher level than I do, and I'm ok with that.
