video converter software shutting down a pc

I'm trying to convert this mkv file (4.5g) to an avi and for some reason it keeps shutting down my pc. I tried it on two programs, (AVS and xilisoft) and both do the same. xilisoft will get up to 1% and AVS would get to 75%. I do notice my laptop fan kicking in higher but the room was quite cold and the laptop did not feel any hotter than normal. Any ideas of what could be the issue? running it on vista, dual 1.8cpu, 4g ram. Any recommended converters that would maybe take up less resources?

sounds like an overheat issue, but dont expect to much with only a 1.8 ghz proc, speedfan can be used to monitor temps, and having task manager open while converting will give you an ideal of the resources being used, i would suggest using a desktop for converting, and something with a proc @ 3.0ghz dual core.

you have a hardware issue. trying to find other software while ignoring that is silly.

anyways god is smiting you for piracy
