Video converter, Handbrake alternative?

I need to convert AVCHD (mts) to a less lossy format (say quicktime) for editing - my fast core 2 duo imac is choking on the handbrake 720p mp4s, which is all handbrake is offering me (tried x264 and ffmeg).

Any converter have more conversion options, hopefully something lossless/lightly compressed?

I understand both garbage in garbage out (you can't add detail) and that the files will be huge, I just need to convert it to a format that's more Final Cut Pro friendly, and will convert back to MP4 once editing is complete.

Nevermind - read the simple to use LOG AND TRANSFER method of importing footage directly into FCP. Never had to use that on HDV, so I was a bit confused.
