video converter for PSP?

HiME

Senior member
My PSP is currently running on 3.40 OE-A custom firmware. I would like to convert .rmvb and .avi videos for my PSP under the best quality and maximum resolution (480×272). I tried PSP video 9 before but I'm quite sick of those advertisements that comes along with the program. Any suggestions for a free video converter? thanks

3GP Converter is free but I don't think it uses the max resolution. I've played anime after re-encoding it using 3GP and it looks fine and I'm able to read the subtitles without a problem if that says anything about the quality.

Normally I would convert movies into MPEG-4 SP but it seems that MPEG-4 AVC is the video format that I'm looking for. It has a higher quality than MPEG-4 SP and it is supposed to support the maximum resolution (480*272) on my PSP.

I'd also heard of another format called PMP AVC but I'm not sure how will its quality compare against MPEG-4 SP and MPEG-4 AVC.

Still looking forward for more inputs. Thanks for your input though, Aikouka.

I use Super to convert all my files to mp4.

Don't use the PSP pre-set, just set it to MP4 H.264 29.97 fps.

EDIT: whoops, not sure if Super supports 480x272, I always used 320x240. I think you can force 480x272 using the directshow option set.

I'll have to see if 3GP can do mp4 H264 then... I believe it can as it isn't just for PSP encoding. I'll also check out that SUPER app for my own PSP.

By the way, is running these H264 MP4's just as easy as running the normal MP4's on a PSP? I have 3.40-OE-A as well and I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

If you have an AMD video card, I believe the AVIVO package (which is not bundled with Catalyst) allows you to convert video files to PSP format.

Yeah, once you convert em just drop em into the video folder and that's it. No need for that root folder crap.

How about AutoMKV?

Free, has quite a few AVC config xml's. Ipod, PSP, PS3, Xbox, etc....
You can custom resize (thanks to avisynth which I believe is required). And also use some avisynth filters too (denoisers, sharpeners, etc...).

Can mux into mp4, avi and mkv (of course only mp4/mkv can be used for x264 though).

BTW it's free.
Bow down to the all mighty and powerful AutoMKV

You'll definitely need avisynth.
And you'll probably need ffdshow, latest xvid build (Kopie), and Nero's AAC encoder.
All of which are linked to from the above site.

IMO, AutoMKV is like a one stop shop for an easy to use yet powerful mpeg4 encoder gui.
It also does WMV but who uses that anyway 😉
