There's two pretty good free ones that I use:
Videora: http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/
Handbrake: http://handbrake.fr/

Both are open-source, and freeware. I use Handbrake to convert DVD's and I use Videora to convert everything else. You probably need to use RipIt4Me for any recent DVD's, the ripper it comes with isn't good enough to rip any protected DVD.

LOL, it seems we're the only 2 people with Iphones around here.

videoera crashes the SHIZ out of my computer

Trying handbrake now

Have you tried http://www.erightsoft.com/Superdc.html

Why does Videora keep freezing

I've just found it an hour ago and it converts most files Beautifully and it's loaded with options.

WHAT I'M TRYING to do now is convert a x264 copy of ratatouille 1080p down for the phone, BUT it seems to just Keep spinning without outputing an actual file. my comp goes to 100% but nothing..

Do you know of a converter that can do x264 to x264 encoding?

The only two that I've tried are Videora and Handbrake - I'll take a look at Super. I haven't had any issues with Videora crashing - it's been stable for me, but I'm on an older version. And Handbrake is slow... it takes about 2-4 times the length of the movie to convert. There should be a DOS-like window with status updates, but for a 90 minute movie, it's 150-360 minutes conversion time (depending on your computer, I have a 4GB Core 2 Duo E6600 and it takes about 200 minutes to convert a 90 minute movie from DVD to iPhone).

Do you mess with the resolution / aspect ratio when converting videos? Have you had any issues with the iPhone cropping the video when you're watching it?

Ok, I finally got videora to work. IDK why but the CPU use is default to HIGH when i installed. And that just freezes everything when the conversion starts. This thing works well thus far. "only problem actually is the Vid came out Larger lol." But it looks great nontheless.

What bitrate should i be using if i'm puting the vids in h264.

Ratatouille is finally converting, 5 more hours.

I'm converting on a 2.9ghz opteron 144

No, I leave everything set to the default that the program thinks it should use - so aside from the input, the ouput and the "iPhone" setting, I don't touch anything else.

I've never had any video quality issues at all while watching - the quality usually seems excellent (not too hard on a tiny screen, but still looks great). You mean the image size changes while you are viewing it?

No, I ment the File size came out bigger than the original.

Also I just converted 300, and the Audio was out of sync. WTH.. grrr this took so long.

My brother put a couple videos on my iPod Touch and both were slightly cropped vertically (the whole time - it didn't change). I had trouble reading subtitles in one of them. Switching between the "zooms" (widescreen/standard(?)) didn't help. I'm not sure if he messed something up, or the source video had an incorrect aspect ratio. The quality was fine.

I'm converting from h264 1080p to 480x200 so maybe, theres some incompats there, But I got the audio to sync after searching 12 diff forums. Just put -async 1 into the cli text box.
