video conferencing products

Please list any recommendations on inexpensive video conferencing products and software for personal use.

I know most of those inexpensive PC cameras you can buy include some type of software but I haven't found much info on the quality or usablity.

Mostly I'm interested in setting up the ability to video conference with my family while away on business using my laptop with a built in camera.

MSN messenger has built in capability but I think it has a hard time working through any kind of hardware router and needs a direct connection to the Internet which is of course unacceptable. Especially if I plan to use a public connections.

MSN Messenger has been improved for traversing routers over the last couple of releases. Perhaps still has problems with some models, but otherwise much better than v6.x or earlier.

Skype might be able to do videoconferencing without a hitch over routers, since they seem to have been pretty successful with audio...give them a try. I personally haven't used Skype for video yet, so I can't attest to the video quality or the ability to work around routers...
