Video Conferencing - Gear and Software ?

Hey everybody.

Since this is kind of all-encompassing, I figured I'd post it in the General hardware section.

On to the meat;

I've been asked to look into the possibility of having a videoconferencing network set up though internal point-to-point transfer; a requirement would be to have multiple users online simultaneously; kind of like a 'conference call' but with faces. I'm thinking a maximum of 12-16 users would probably be the upper limit (for training) and the average about 8 users for the meetings.

Bandwidth isn't really a concern, as we have dedicated links to our branch offices using data compressors and very high speed lines, but what is a concern, is I really have no idea what kind of gear to be using. We will likely be outfitting some users with laptops /w integrated webcams and mics, but outside of that, I'm looking for suggestions for the fixed room.

We have an available room to be dedicated to such a set-up, so I'm here for input on the 'what' and the 'how'; software suggestions (pay software is fine as long as it'll do the job) are welcome.

Does anybody have any experience or suggestions for camera / mic gear?

I'm assuming Skype / Gtalk won't adequately handle the needs here, but if they do, that's fine as well.

Thanks.
