Video cards without fan? What are the options?

Hello,

I'm doing some research and I'm planning to build a home theater PC. My #1 goal is for this thing to be quiet. I've been out of the video card arena for a while. I had a 3Dfx Voodoo3 2000 until a year ago, and then I upgraded to a GeForce 2 Ultra which is still serving me well today.

Anyway, I'd like to get a video card for the new PC, but I'm looking for one without a fan. I'd like something that is decent at playing games and also has good 2D quality. What's the best video card out there without a fan?

Thanks!
Aaron

How small does it have to be? If you don't care about the size, you can get pretty much any video card and replace the stock fan with a Zalman ZM80A fanless heatsink.

Any ATI RADEON 9XXX card. Many of the low-end ones come stock with just a heatsink (up to the 9600Non-Pro), and you can fit the higher ones with a Zalman heatpipe cooler.

No, don't care about the size. Full-sized card are ok.

So I could essentially get a 9700pro or something similar and put the Zalman on it and you think it'd be ok? That's wonderful news. Thanks!

Aaron

Yep. Sapphire actually sells both a 9600Pro and 9800Pro with the ZM80-C already mounted on it. They call it the "Ultimate Edition".

Looks like my perfect card. I checked newegg, and they don't seem to sell these. Any other vendors you'd recommend?

Thanks!
Aaron

You wouldn't happen to mean these, would you? 🙂

Edit: looks like they don't carry the 9600Pro version at newegg, though. You can buy the cooler direct from Zalman and mount it on any 9600/9700/9800 card.

Double edit: or get it from newegg. heatpipes

odd
newegg used to carry the 9600 pro ultimate (heatpipe version) a couple months ago, you could prolly find it at another reputable dealer online if you dont feel like modding it yourself, though it shouldnt be any trouble
