is there such thing as different types of video cards with PAL and NTSC?
example.. a video card that is PAL, and another that is NTSC

my cousin, who works as a sales manager (i think, not really sure) said that since she works in asia, the video cards are PAL, and probably won't work with american machines?

i've never heard something about this before, and i don't think there is such thing for video cards.. but i just want to confirm, thanks!

No, there is no such thing as pal or ntsc video cards. They actually have nothing to do with that.

PAL and NTSC are dvd formats used in different parts of the world. For example, North America uses NTSC whereas parts of Europe use PAL etc. If you have, say, a 7800gtx video card, it will play any format that you can get your computer to play. If you stick a PAL dvd or NTSC dvd in, it will play as long as you have the right software [aka PowerDVD].

PAL dvd's are not formatted to play in north america, and vice versa with NTSC and Europe [on standalone players, like the one connected to your tv]. Your video card will play any and all; all you need are the codecs.

Maybe for tv_out it matters, as my ABIT Guru-9550 has a jumper to set either PAL or NTSC....?

NTSC and PAL are not for only DVDs BTW, NTSC and PAL came about way before DVDs were dreamed of.

They are broadcast standards. They started in 1940s-1960s and end with DVDs. HDTV and all computer resolutions are neither NTSC or PAL. Once DVDs are no longer used, and standard TV isn't around, there will be no more NTSC or PAL.

There are most definately PAL and NTSC video cards, ATI's AIW cards are either or, but not both. There are seperate models for North American, and Euro-asian markets. The card will work fine, but the tuner will only work with the specific format. Your cousin may be refering to multimedia capable graphic cards

Some ATI VIVO video cards are also PAL and NTSC specific (there are probably others as well)
Q18: Does the Radeon® 64MB with video-in and video-output support PAL I, B/G, DK, M, N, and SECAM L, D, K?

A18: A PAL edition of the Radeon® 64MB VIVO supports the following:
For Video Output - PAL I, B/G, DK, M, N
For Video Input - PAL I, B/G, DK, M, N and SECAM L, D, K

Because your card handles more than computer resolutions. If your card is able to input broadcast signals (TV tuners, etc) then it will most definately have to support either NTSC or PAL or both.

EDIT: I think most cards that have TV out can auto sense what format to output on, or do so with the drivers... I don't remember seeing such a jumper for TV out on my cards.
