I have a friend that has a Compaq computer with a AMD K6-2 300mhz processor. It has onboard video but he wanted to add a 3d card to it. He moved the jumper on the motherboard to disable the onboard video and put the GF4 420mx card in the first PCI slot. Unfortunately he has no video. I think the computer just locks up. What could be the problem? The specs on the card say minimum of 266mhz cpu. Thanks for your time and help.

you have to remove the old drivers first

reenable onboard video
in the os remove the drivers
reboot and go into bios disable video
reboot then shut down the computer add the gf4
reboot set it to a standard pci adapter
reboot then add the correct drivers
hope this helps

First, check the obvious. If he is using onboard video, this means his monitor was plugged into whatever port the onboard video provided. If he plugged in his new GF4 and forgot to move his monitor plug from the onboard to the GF4, it will, obviously, display no picture. Just had to point that out in case that simple mistake was made. I've done it myself. 🙂

Also go into the bios and check to make sure there are no other settings that are connected to the onboard video... Make sure if it has a setting to tell the motherboard your using a seperate video card as well...?

And do all the above... 🙂

Thanks for the advice. He told me he did plug the monitor into the new video card. Wolfsraider what do you mean by disabling the video drivers in the os? Do you mean remove the device from the device manager? He is going to drop it off here this weekend. Should I change the adapter to the generic adapter in the display properties and then turn the computer off. Then put in the new card and plug the monitor in and reboot? Thanks for taking the time
