Video card, what's my best deal?

I have a P3-667 with 256 megs of RAM running on a TNT2 Ultra and I'd like to run my games at 800*600 or 1024 without worrying about my framerate... like in No One Lives Forever, it's a little bit choppy, I guess the game engine isn't so great.

So I'd like to update my video card... but with my processor/memory, I was wondering what would be my best bet... like if I buy a GeForce 3, my computer won't even be able to keep with the video card...

So my question is.. what's the fastest video card (made by nVidia) that my system could keep up with?

I'd say a GeForce 2 .... maybe a GTS.... but it's too expensive... would I see a nice improvement with a GF 2 MX 400 (most of them come with 64 megs of RAM now, but I'm not so sure it's a big deal over 32 megs)

The GTS is a pretty good choice, and the Pro and Ultra if you can afford them. How much are you planning to spend? I would stay away from the lower-end MX400 because they're really not that great. You can pick one up for about $80, but you would see a noticeable improvement if you got a Geforce2 GTS/Pro/Ultra. Hope this helps.

Okay thanks for the advice.
What kind of framerates can I expect with a P3-667 / 256 megs of RAM with a GTS... and with a MX400?

But except from the framerate, are there like visuals enhancements that I will notice? (between a TNT2 and a GF2..... and between a MX400 and GTS)?

Hardware Transform and Lighting for one, if you cant afford the GTS see if you can afford the GTS-V, its cheaper but still DDR RAM (I think newegg.com carries it).

I'm a little bit confused.... I'm gonna list the GF2 cards in order of performance... please correct me if I'm wrong

MX 200
MX
MX400
----- is there like a "regular" GF2?? -----
GTS-V (I never saw this card, but grifterspawn mentionned it)
GTS
Pro
Ultra

now..... where does the TI goes? are there some other models that I forgot?

Look around the web, I bought 2 brand new GeForce GTS one for $70.00 and the other for $80.00 which is the same price I've seen MX 200 in stores.

Are the drivers for the Kyro II mature?

I heard it's a pretty good card but the drivers sucked...... what about now?

"original gf2"
gts-v
gts
pro
ti (ti and pro are comparable)

I reccomend a gts-v or ti, gts vs are like $65 on newegg and ti's are $95+

The human eye can only see about 70 fps (i think) but then for some ppl fps is life.
ultra

<< that's where i usually buy my stuff (NCIX) >>

Do they still ship stuff without packing material? Got two drives from them that way.

GeForce2 GTS-V. It is a slightly lower clocked GF2. I had a similar system. The CPU won't even keep up with a GF2. The GTS-V is about 30-40% cheaper than the standard card while only being marginally slower.

I have a GF2 Ti it runs great I got it for i belive 93 bucks with shipping I'd look around for one of those if you can

Another vote for the GTS-V if you're on a budget. It's far superior than any GeForce MX and is actually a little cheaper in most places. I've bought two of these and they work great.

I would try the Visiontec Geforce GTS w /32 mb ddr. They are going on ubid for about $50 plus $10 or so shipping. Excellent performance.

original geforce2 is called geforce2 gts.

only visiontek has gts-v card.
gts from ubid is actually gts-v like the gts-v from newegg.
some vendors don't know their so-cheap gts is gts-v.

This sounds like a great deal. Just one question if I up grade my mboard to the new Nforce, is the video in that board better or worse than this card? it seems if I am upgrading anyway I could save by not buying a separate card.

Radeon 7500 will fall somewheres between the gf2 pro and gf2 ultra about. It's just a rebadged radeon running at a much high clock (270mhz core/230mhz ddr) versus the old 183/183. It seemed to be the best budget card in the Unreal benchmark on AT a little while ago. I've got a friend with the card and it runs fine with his P3 650. Ive got an original radeon in my old machine and i couldnt be more satisfied when i paired it up with an old P3 933.

i've just upgraded my video card last week...from a tnt2 ultra to a GF2 TI....
very satisfy with the performance so far...the score i got from 3d mark 2001 (with gf2 ti) is 2X of what i got from my old card...
if you're planning to get a gf2 based card...get a TI....😉
