I do not think my cpu would really help over your Q9550 at 4.0 though. I did oc my cpu to 4.2 and it made no difference except for a few spots in Fallout 3 NV. of course I knew that my gtx570 was the main limitation but I was just curious to see.

anyway if you get bored and want to run some of the built in game benchmarks PM and let me know.

I like Nvidia drivers though, NO version a,b,c cap1 with a hotfix 2 stuff

lol, I remember that from the couple months I owned a 4670. just in a matter of weeks I had to install two different drivers and two different hotfixes. and even then they still had a couple of game issues. I gave up after never getting Clear Sky fixed and went back to Nvidia. of course a couple months later they did finally fix Clear Sky's missing fences but I had moved on to the gtx260 by then. there are a few other things that bother me to but I will not get into anymore of that. I don't mind recommending AMD card but for me personally, there will not be an AMD card in my system anytime soon.

I would guess if we cranked up the settings I would start to pull away. 2 6870 2gb's at 980 core should beat a gtx 580 by more than 20% easily.

Cpu demanding games you should win with that 2500k. bastage! :)

Benchmarks yes. But I still prefer 1 gtx570 over 2 weaker 6870 anyday.

The problem is my gtx460 @ 930 core was faster than a gtx560ti or at least as fast. A single gtx570 would not be much of a upgrade, plus I wanted 2gb of video memory for longevity, remember these cards will be good for about 1 year for me.

AMD's 7xxx series cards are right around the corner and about to push the other cards down in price, wait it out

You can overclock the 570 as well. An overclocked 460 hits about 4k in 3dmark11. The 570 oc hits almost 6k. That's a 50% increase. Now with 6870 CF anytime CF doesn't work right (that will happen for example in Skyrim) you are going to be quite crippled in performance. Maybe not even faster than your oc 460.

even a very mild oc on the gtx570 should take it over 6000. I have never done a really high oc on my gtx570 and got over 6200.

Raven, what you're not mentioning to the OP is that you ditched your e8500 once you saw how badly it was bottlenecking your old 6850! ;)

Valid point, I completely forgot about that lol. My X6 has been working so flawlessly :D

Skyrim cannot use more than two cores. His CPU is plenty to support upwards of 40fps, which should be fine in this title. He could only do better by going with Sandy Bridge, which is way above his total budget. Sounds like he'll deal with that in the future, anyway, and it would be a wise investment to take advantage of a HD6870 in other games.

But yeah, he did mention he was going to upgrade, and the HD6870 is just too awesome to pass up right now, nothing in the market can match it at the $160 price range.
