Hello. I have a Dell xps 410
core 2 1.87ghz
2 GB of ram
It has the stock power supply
It has a GeForce 7300 le in it now but I want to upgrade
Budget is $100 to $150
I am not a heavy gamer, mostly race Nascar and RFactor
I am almost ready to get a GeForce EVGA 9800 gtx 512mb from newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...20100510215701

but thought I would come and ask before I did.
Would this be a good choice or should I be looking at something else ?
Thanks for any suggestions,
Mike

The gurus should chime in here shortly, but I'm pretty sure you want a new 5770 if that is your price point. Even a used GTX 260 you can grab for $135. Both of those would be better choices then the card you've chosen I believe.

First off, is that a standard or slim case? I don't know my Dell models that well.

Don't spend more than about 90 on a 9800. You can get a 5770 for around 130 after rebate. It will use less power, and is a faster card.

I'm a bit worried about his power supply. Typical pre-built computers like Dell's usually use atrocious units. If that is the case, then you need something like a 5750 or 5770 card that won't use a lot of power.

As long as it will fit in your Dell case, then yea. That is the one I would get. But if your case is a "slim" model, it isnt going to fit.

Do you have a link to your Dell PC ?

Your XPS 410 has a 375W power supply which Dell rates at sustained wattage vs. the peak wattage used by PS manufacturers. Basically its better that what you would first think and should peak around 450W. Given your CPU I'd think an HD 5750 would be a good choice and would definitely work with the Dell XPS (then again the 9800 GTX would as well, but the HD 5750 is stronger and more efficient).

Get the HD5770. Considering the current market, it's only ~$20-25 more than the 5750 and is definitely worth the price. Your PSU is more than powerful enough to handle it.

You power supply is fine for even a 5770. If your budget allows get that. If not get a 5750 and overclock it. Either way your performance will easily be 4x better.

I would assume its a standard case. Care to share a link for the 5770 ?
I looked at newegg and didn't see any rebates.
Would this be the one to get ?

Thanks

I think that would be an excellent choice for your needs. Its also good that you've chosen a reference card design.

Remember that the 6 pin power connector attaches to the end of the card so it's actually 9" instead of 8.5". Also remember to register your card within 30 days of purchase so you get the warranty. :)

Actually AT's review on the 5770 showed the orb cooler to be better than the reference design. If Newegg is a requirement, then I'd go with one of the following:

If Newegg isn't a requirement, then I'd go with this one from TigerDirect. If you go to Bing.com, search for MOTHERBOARD, click on the Bing Cashback link in the ad for TigerDirect, then you should see $19.20 Bing Cashback in your shopping cart at TigerDirect. You'll get that money in 2 months (I've done it many times with no problems). That puts the card at $146.90 after shipping and Bing cashback.

Ditto, excellent advice. The orb cooler >> shroud cooler on the 5770, I was absolutely shocked when I tested it for myself.

I couldn't find the article you're referencing. Would you mind providing a link? It's not that I doubt you. I'm just genuinely curious since the only thing I could find was this:

"However in spite of the 5750’s lower power consumption, it doesn’t do so well here in terms of temperature compared to the 5770, coming in 4C hotter. We’re going to chalk it up to the egg cooler being unable to match the 5770’s shrouded cooler. This of course makes the fact that the 5770’s shrouded cooler is going to eventually go away all the more meaningful, as conceivably the replacement coolers would end up being less effective."

edit: I read the second page again. It seems they didn't like the shroud because it was longer than the pcb and made it difficult to plug in the 6-pin power connector, but I couldn't find anything about the egg cooler having better performance.

edit2: trusty google to the rescue. Egg cooler is better.

edit3: Found it! Don't know why I couldn't find it under the 'gpu' section of AT...

I need to ask one more thing....is there a Nvidea card that would be worth looking at ?
I have always liked GeForce cards so Its going to be a change for me if I go ATI.
Thanks
Mike

Hi..just thought I would post on what I decided. I went with the XFX 5750 card. It was cheaper and for what racing I do it works just great. It tripled my fps from my old card....with everything maxed. The install cd was a waste of time and the ATI drivers are kindof goofy to me but It is working just great. Thanks

Good call on XFX. If you decide to sell it down the line, the lifetime warranty will transfer to the next buyer (you have to make sure to register, though).
