Video card upgrade

So my current setup is:

Shuttle AN35 Ultra
AMD Barton 2800+
2x256 megs Corsair XMS PC2700 + 512 meg XMS PC3200
ATI Radeon 9600 XT AGP 128 meg

My problem is that I want a new graphics card, yet I don't want to have to upgrade my mb, and processor. Now I was thinking that I could just go for another AGP card but if I did then when I went to upgrade the rest of my system it would most likely be a PCI-E mb. Understand my issue? What do you think I should do?

Edit: whoops, sorry about the wrong forum post.

You want to get an AGP card so you don't have to upgrade mobo, yet want the AGP card to be able to work when you move to a PCI-E mobo too?

Maybe when you do upgrade you'll be able to find a specialty mobo that does both AGP and PCI-E. Thinking maybe Anand mentioned one of those, maybe that was something else though.

The 6800s are very nice though, as linked by TGS. You ought to be able to use one of those long enough. Or maybe a better match for your current system would be a 6200 or 6600, then save up to upgrade mobo/cpu/vid in one fell swoop down the road. Dunno if ATI has current AGP options, but they've got some good cards too.

All I know is that I would recommend against buying Gefore 6600 GT. The sucker overheats like crazy and then freezes. Right now I can only use my computer with the side panel open.

I think you have to make the decision whether or not you want to wait for a full sytem upgrade or if you want to just upgrade your video card.

If you buy a pretty nice AGP card, there is a significant upgrade path still available in S939 procs (including x2) + AGP motherboard.

If you feel you need to prepare for PCI-e, then you could get something like a 9800 pro-ish card from FS/FT (~$100 or so) to delay the move a few more months.
