Video card upgrade?

I'm currently using Gainward GeForce 4 Ti4200 GS. I'd like to try a ATI card, but the only one in my budget is probably a 9600 pro. Would I be upgrading or downgrading?

That would be a good upgrade. The Radeon 9600 Pro is one of the best midrange cards and it plays Half-life 2 well.

I would spring for just a little bit more and get the 9700 Pro. It is quite a bit more powerful than the 9600 and only a little bit more. I have one and love it. Ive seen them go for about $200 here on the forums.

going for the 9700 pro would be a mistake. The 9800 non pro would be the way to go. it is cheaper then the 9700 pro and all you need to do to get it at 9800pro speeds is flash the bios. its just under 200 which puts it a little more then you want to spend. i have booth a 9600 pro and an 9800np they are great cards. either way you go it will be a good choice.
