Hello all,

I am getting ready for the ol' upgrade later this summer in preparation for Half-Life 2 and other great games coming out this holiday season. Right now, I'm running a Pentium III 1.0 GHz with 512 MBs SDRAM and a GeForce 3. I plan to get either a 2.4 or 2.6 GHz Pentium 4 (800 FSB), the Asus P4P800 motherboard, and a gigabyte of Samsung 3200 DDR SDRAM. I'm not going to have much money left over for a video card, but I'm worried that Half-Life 2 (as well as other new games) won't fare too well with the old GeForce 3. For about $150.00 (per pricewatch.com prices) what video would you all recommend? I've been looking into the GeForce FX5600 Ultra, which can be found for as low as $133.00 on Pricewatch. I've seen some framerates tests, and this card seems to fare well with such upcoming "high-horsepower-sucking" games such as Doom 3. What is the ATI alternative? Is there a better card than what I am looking at now? Thanks for the help.

The ATI alternative would be the 9600 Pro, which overclocks like a demon in most cases. I'd keep the GF3 for now and buy the video card when you need it for HL2 and Doom3, prices will drop and cards will be better.

Thanks...appreciate the info. Since Half-Life 2 has been delayed for a Holiday release, that might just be the best option. I might even wait to upgrade my whole computer until then.

Thanks again,

Yeap, definitely wait until the game comes out so the video cards price drops some. Wooohooo!!! Can't wait to play Half Life 2!
