Until about a week ago I had been running an older Asus GF4 Ti4200 128 meg (only 4x agp). I went away for the weekend and came back to a computer that was running just fine, but I had no display whatsoever. I rebooted and there was huge graphical corruption at the bios screens and such. I figured maybe my monitor was toast so I tried some other computers with my monitor, which turned out to be totally fine.
So I assumed it was the video card, which I pulled out, and noticed that the fan was dead and in fact the motor had melted clear through the center of the plastic fan "blades" So it definitely had to be my video card. I went out, and got a deal on an open box "only used in benchmarks" video card from a local place, an Asus Radeon 9600XT. I was assured it was good but when I installed it, I instantly got graphical issues, though quite different from my Ti4200 and less severe.
Next I had the motherboard checked out to see if maybe the AGP slot was having issues. The motherboard tested just fine and there were absolutely no issues there.
So I tried to take the defective video card back, and the guy tells me that "it was working before, so it must be something with your computer" after which I told him the motherboard was tested and he claims that since my whole system wasn't tested he won't take the card back.
Now, is it possible that a bad power supply would be so specific as to ONLY constantly fry my video cards, as this man claims is happening. Frankly I think I just got a bad card, but I'd like to know if this is even possible, noting that I am having absolutely NO other hardware failures.
Would appreciate much feedback on this as I think this guy is just trying to take me for a ride.
PS. I forgot to mention the guy did test the video card I brought back and found it to be bad, but again like I said it was apparently my or my computer's fault that it is now broken according to this genius.
I would also like to add that anyone in the Barrie, Ontario area should frankly stay away from Custom Computers 4u (http://www.customcomputers4u.com) as they have absolutely no regard for customer service whatsoever.
