My son has an 9800gt and it is getting long in the tooth. He wants Battlefield 3 for Christmas and I have concerns that the video card may not run it very well. His monitor is 1680x1050. What would be a decent video card under $100? Can I get something decent at that price and how much faster would it be? I am out of the loop right now with regard to video cards and I need to order something today. Thanks!!!

Not trying to hijack your thread, but I've got a 1GB 6790 for sale for under $100 shipped.

It's based on Barts core, about 8% slower than a 6850. Would work well at that resolution.

AMD 6850 but nits more then $100. A 5770 would be right at $100 but only sightly faster if any but would support DX11 if he changes to a wide screen monitor

^ Get that

You can probably find something good on the FS forums, I saw a 5850 go for $100 on [H] forums.

Assuming specs in your sig are still accurate, that Opteron might have some trouble with BF3

There's not a lot at the $100 price point at the moment. I bought my son a GTX 460 Super OC for $100 from the Anandtech trade forums back in June, and it works well for BF3. He is running the same resolution. The 550 Ti is about the same performance for around $100. From the ATI side, the 5770 or 6790 can be had for around that price.

Yup own a 6790 myself it plays BF3 at 1600x1200 on high matched with a i3 2100.

Op i would take adam up on his offer with a slight oc it comes very close to 6850 performance.

I'd grab a nVidia GeForce GTX 460 1GB (version 1). They can be had for $120 new. Much better tesselation support than any AMD offering.

Tessellation doesn't cause that big of a performance hit in Battlefield 3.

Here are some benchmarks for Battlefield 3 at high quality, 1680x1050:

The Radeon HD 6850 beats the Geforce 460. Lowest price for a 460 on newegg.com is $149.99; for the 6850 it's $139.99.

But at $100, you're going to want something like a Radeon HD 6770 (same thing as the 5770), which beats the price-equivalent Nvidia offering, the Geforce 450.

6950 2gb is good for BF3. YOU can play with highest performance! I like to use gigabyte cards for their fans and heat dissipation~~

Grab him a GTX 460 1GB , it will go well with his processor and OC. The card is the best bang for the buck @ around 140 dollars. gl

He plays @ 1680res I promise you BF3 will be blazing fast, 60fps ,, most all times,,,,,,, gl
