Video card symptoms, motherboard problem?

System:
Abit IC7-G
3GHz Intel
ATI 9800

Problem:
With the 9800 in the box the system gets to the boot screen, starts to display Intel but won't finish spelling it. For example, In, Int, Inte. The system just hangs. Also the display is a strange purple shade.

Attempted Cures:
Checked the 9800 in another system, worked fine.
Tried a old GeForce 2 in the system in question - boots but still a purple shade.

Maybe related:
System was hooked up to a Dell 2405 LCD which seems to mess with older computers display settings when they switch to another monitor. I feel like the 9800 should be able to adapt though.

Thanks for your thoughts!

A purple/pink tint to the whole screen like that usually means that the monitor is failing and should be replaced (unless you happen to like looking at the world through rose-colored glasses). 🙂

Did a complete rebuild of the system. My northbridge heatsink had been somewhat loose so perhaps that was the culprit. Anyway, seems to be fine now.
