Another option is to spend $270 on a GTX780. Considering this card was $650 on May 2013, this is an outstanding value all things considered. Since you are a casual gamer, this card would last you 3-5 years. Just make sure to overclock your CPU. Having said that, for single GPUs, AMD's drivers are great. The only negative that will affect you is higher power usage if you are running 3 monitors concurrently in 2D mode. For lower idle power usage with multi-monitors, you have to go NV at this time.

I've switch back and forth between both camps, they are both good.

Frig the 280X popped up close to 600 bucks from mining last year shortly after I bought mine, got it for 299 last year on a Black Friday thing.

Even though there are a lot of cards out there that have been discounted by a great deal, I would still like to keep the cost of the video card in line with what my computer is worth. I want to keep it as simple as possible.

Thanks for all the input.

Well besides 780/970/980/780Ti, NV has nothing worth buying at current prices. Since you don't want to buy an AMD card, just pick between 750Ti, 760 and 770 depending on your budget. Keep in mind all of those cards have 2GB of VRAM while 4GB versions cost way too much.

check out this review, aftermarket oc'd 280 destroys gtx 760 (and 285)

+1 for this. My 280x is a most magnificent beast.

I've just recomended an XFX 280 to my brother using that link and he is running an older machine (overclocked Q6600) . £149 for a slight factory overclock at Scan.co.uk.

Never had an issue with AMD drivers either.

The 280's are end of life though so grab one while you can!

I've been thinking about this and since Project Cars, a game I am very interested in, is delayed until spring, I'm not in a big hurry on a new graphics card.

I'm thinking I may go with this EVGA 760 from newegg.com. It's about $200 after rebate and seems like about as much video card as my older rig can handle. I think it would be a good match with my 2.8GHz Lynnfield CPU, I've got plenty of RAM and the PCIe2.0 shouldn't be too much of a hindrance.

The R9 280 is a good deal for a great video card, but I've had two EVGA cards in this computer before, they've worked well without problems so I think I want to stick with nVidia.

Thinks this is a good decision on a video card? As I mentioned earlier, I am not a graphics card expert by any means and I appreciate all the input and advice.

Its about as good a deal I've seen for a 760. A few will dip below that with $20-30 rebates. As others have stated, its really hard to recommend nvidia right now in this price bracket. I've stayed away myself this whole year, keeping my 560ti for now until I see what shows up in the 960 and revised (post coil whine) 970s. If you want to keep the price down, I'd go with a 750ti under $150, preferrably no more than $120-130 for a 2gb card.

Also, I see nothing wrong with getting an overpowered video card than can be put into a new system later. So, another opinion for an AMD card here at your price point. :)
