Hi folks,

I am puting together a computer for someone and am stuck at the video card. She has a $200 budget for this part of the computer. Here are some of the prospective specs:

AMD Athlon64 3000+ 754
1GB Ram
Chaintech MB

We are just looking for the best video card in this price range (give or take a little) given the above combination. Anything in the very near future would also be possible, but I don't think she wants to wait too awefully long. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I assume this computer is to be built within the next week. So, i reccomend the 9800pro. Its around $190-$210. Its right in your price range and the best performer today for its price.

I second that, or possibly a geforce 5900XT.

If she can wait a month or two, a 6600GT would be the best bet.

Are the 128 MB (256 bit) cards (9800 Pro cards that is) good enough for moderate use or do you need to shell out the extra $$ for 256 MB?

Also, if I am not mistaken, all of the GameVE 6600 cards are PCIe and that doesn't match up with AMD processors and motherboards. I don't see choices for AMD PCIe motherboards at present. The wait a few months referred to AGP versions of the 6600.
