Video Card Stuttering/Shearing

Hey All -

I have noticed this prob in Half Life 2 and Far Cry - it seems like it only does it in higher end games. In center of my screen, when or spin around, the screen gets cut in half horizontally. When I enable Vsync this problem goes away, but everything else seems to get laggy. Im running a 3200+ with a 9800 pro and 512 of ram. Anyone have a suggestion?

Get 1GB of RAM. Leave on vsync, it makes it so the frame isn't updated mis refresh. It does lower FPS, but it makes things look much better.

This prob has got to be able to be fixed somewhat without buying more ram. Im sry that was a typo now that i realize it - I have 1 gb of ram on this desktop...Should my tabs for d3d be on performance or on quality? Would adjusting the refresh rate help? Do I need refresh override on?

Okay, then drop your in-game detail. By "get laggy" I assume you mean the framerate takes a nosedive. A 9800Pro is a nice card, but it's not up to running FarCry at 1280x1024 "Very High" detail without compromising something. What settings are you at?

- M4H

Ok, well by laggy i mean that kind that is vibrational distortion - it's just not smooth...

Settings for HL2-

What I put it at...
1024x768
Texture, Detail, etc - Medium
Shadow, Outlines - Low

What HL2 recommends for my comp
-All settings at max on 1024x768

It's not the kind of lag where you can tell your system resources are being drained - I think it's directly related to my FPS - I have heard that on med-high end cards the fps is often too high and vsync seeks to correct that - i keep Vsync on and I dont get the cutting....butttt I still get that kind of vibration and somehwat frequent stutter - I need suggestions for my d3d settings (ie where i need the tabs at) in correlation with my hl2/farcry settings...

btw - my refresh is 75 hertz with override off...

wow...that is fairly good hardware...is your power supply A-OK?

you might be low on electricity...what does Motherboard MOnitor say the currents are at?

Ah, so it's an occasional "Hiccup" in framerate and not a steady "Chug"?

If so, it could be:

- Autosave in HL2
- Fastwrites/sideband addressing in BIOS
- AGP Aperture
- Drivers

- M4H

All my voltages are fine - this I definitely know...

Does shifting the d3d tab toward quality decrease the framerate?

Usually. When you shift between quality and performance you can see the difference in settings. I.e, "performance" no AA or AF, on "quality" it either enables them or sets it to app preference. I just use "custom" and set the way I like. I always use some AA. But you need to see whether you want it set by the app, or the CCC. Don't choose 2 x AA in both for example, as that will slow it down

I played FC with high, or very high (on environmental to see the fish & birds) w/o much trouble (other than the pause when you first shoot your gun). Can't remember if I was playing at 10x7, or 11x 8

I only have 512MB of ram, but my card is OC'd to a little higher than XT speeds (415/385)
