I have noticed this prob in Half Life 2 and Far Cry - it seems like it only does it in higher end games. In center of my screen, when or spin around, the screen gets cut in half horizontally. When I enable Vsync this problem goes away, but everything else seems to get laggy. Im running a 3200+ with a 9800 pro and 1 gig of ram. Anyone have a suggestion?

Should my tabs for d3d be on performance or on quality? Would adjusting the refresh rate help? Do I need refresh override on?

Thanks for your help guys

Turning on vsync will prevent shearing because that's exactly what it's for. vsync prevents the next frame of animation from being displayed while the monitor is currently drawing a frame. This obviously causes some delay, how much delay depends on the refresh rate. Setting your refresh as high as your monitor supports will reduce the amount of time spent waiting for the monitor to refresh when vsync is enabled.

As for performance or quality, that depends on your personal preference. I prefer vsync enabled and high quality settings but at a low enough resolution to keep frame rates up. You'll have to play around with the settings a bit to find the best balance on your system.

Both the games you mentioned have intense graphics and are really putting your 9800 pro against the wall . after you do all the things other poster suggested . I would urge you to lower your quality settings and go the performance root
