Depends what you want to play.. My vote also goes to ATI, better image quality, anti-aliasing, only takes one slot, quieter, and faster in almost every dx.9 game especially Far Cry. Both cards are superb, ATI is just better in my opinion and the new cards will come with OverDrive, that is a under warranty overclocking utility in the catalyst driver software.

The next price guide covering video will be posted to anandtech.com within the next couple days and should help answer this question pretty well.

It's a tough call, but my advise to you is look at what games you play at the moment and see how the cards bench against each other.

However I can't see you being dissappointed whichever may you go, as both cards are a major break from the previous generation.

It's going to be personnel preference on this one.

As it is this is what I would go for.

$399 - nVidia 6600GT
$499 - ATI X800XTPE

Go for the ATI card you won't be let down, with either card anyway your machine will be able to handle the next generation of games depending on your current machine.

I am choosing ATI because I have had problems with my NVidia card in the past. I have a 5900 Ultra and the heatsink decides to fall off one day and unknowingly I continued to play games until I recieved a warning message that my video card was dramatically over heating. I sent it back because it would'nt function. I got a refurb card and guess what? Bad refurb. I was really disappointed. I will be sending it back and selling the new refurb I get if it will even work. So I'll be going with ATI. I sold my other PC that the card was in to my brother. Now I'm getting a brand new one! AMD 64Bit 3000+, 1 Gig Corsair XMS Ram, MSI K8T Neo Mobo, and ATI Radeon X800 Pro. Should be good to go for a long time. :-D
