Video Card RMA question

If the fan on the heatsink is dead, is it ok to buy another heatsink but with a working fan (identical) and put it on the vid card? Does that void a possible rma down the road if the card craps out?

I know I could just send it to ATI but that would take so much longer.

Doing any work on the card (regardless of the mfg) will void its warranty. I doubt they would ever be able to tell as long as you used an identical fan/hs but if you called up ATI and asked them they would say send it back for RMA. They would definately not fix the card for you if they knew you had removed the fan.

You should see if you can contact ATI and ask them.

But I am thinking it will indeed void your warranty... sadly.

Yep, that's about it.

But if you're not worried about the warranty or don't want to go without your card for the RMA period then now would be a good time for an aftermarket HSF. CoolerGuys has the VGA Silencer Revision 3 for $13.95 plus shipping. Fits just about any recent ATI card, cools well, lowers case temps and is virtually silent.

Just throwing that idea out there for you.

Yes it will void your warranty. See about getting an RMA or something. If not the VGA Silencers are really nice from what i hear.

Ya, I guess I see the ATI's point. They don't want me screwing around with the card no matter what I put on it. Guess i'll rma it, buy a new one and sell the rma when it gets back a month or two from now.
