Video Card Recommendation

I have a Dell Dimension 8250. I'm not totally sure what the power supply is, but I think it's 250W.

A lot of video cards I see nowadays require 300W power supplies. Changing the power supply is not an option at this point. I've seen some posts on the internet where someone with a Dimension 8250 purchased a video card which claimed to get by fine on a 250W power supply but still had problems getting it to work. So I would prefer not to push that limit, and play it safe by getting a card that runs fine with just 200W or so.

I would like to be able to play new games like Doom 3 and Half Life 2.

Any recommendations?

I would be very surprised if there is a video card capable of running Doom3 and HL2 at playable framerates that works with a 250w power supply.

I know this doesn't help you, but it's just the truth. You need to find a way to upgrade your power supply if you want to play these games enjoyably.

Sure it's possible, but the OP said he doesn't want to take any chances. That would definitely be taking a chance.

If you can wait a bit, the 6600GT would probably work for you, maybe the X700XT as well. Like the last guy said though, anything 9800 or 5900 is gonna be taking a chance and those are pretty much the minimum for "enjoyably" playing new games. A 9600XT might as well if your standards for fps are somewhat modest.
