Additional Notes

Basically, I am building a PC from left over parts and some new parts. I took a Dou Core E7500 from a stripped down PC. I had another PC that the MB died, removed the MB and replaced it with an ASUS P5G41T-M LX Plus MB. I have 4 GB of Kingston DDR3 1066 ram on the way. I want a compatible video card to play games that will last for a few years. This will be mostly a gaming PC, I’m not a hardcore player but I do like to play. I’ll try the PS and if it doesn’t have enough power I’ll upgrade as needed. I am currently using an AMD Phenom 2 X3 720, 4 GB ram and a 4830 video card. I have had no problems with this system. The reviews rated the cards, 4830 at 1,250, the GTX 460 at 2,370, the HD 6850 at 2,750. Not sure what exactly the numbers represent but I take it the 2 cards I am looking at offer twice the current performance. I don’t go beyond standard settings, no overclocking. I’m plain vanilla.

Thanks, Ken

With that older CPU I would look at getting a good CPU cooler, a hyper 212+ or EVO or something similar and overclock that E7500 to 3.6-3.9ghz. (Can be had for 20-30 dollars when on sale) So that leaves you with $100.00 to spend. Then pick up this card ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127687 ) for 109.00 after rebates. Should be able to play most games out there, you will have to turn down some settings on newer games, but this will be a nice card when you decide to upgrade your processor/motherboard to something like an I3 sandybridge or similar.

Yeah it is backwards compatible. All that you lose is some bandwith between the board and the card. I haven't seen a benchmark to prove that it makes much if any difference in FPS.

You guys think the GTX 460 and HD 6850 are a little overkill? The current 4830 card has been fine, no problems at all.

its higher than your budget and they consume a lot more power than the HD 7770

I think that the 460 and the 6850 are both good cards, I have owned both. The performance is very similar to the 7770. The 7770 will consume less power and put off less heat than a 460 or a 6850. If you check the EVGA B Stock section of the EVGA site they have a GTX 460 for about $90.00 which would suit your build as well, however with your powersupply, I would think the 7770 is a better choice.

Hardly. I was thinking along the lines of a used GTX 470. Depending on how much you overclock that thing you're reaching into 570 and above performance. Overkill shouldn't even be a factor when you're purchasing a video card. Try to get as much as performance as you can get for your money.

GTX 470 is to much for his 430w psu

He won't be able to run a 470 on that power supply. I had a reference 470 with an I7 920 all stock with a few fans and a couple of HDD's that drew 430 watts. That would destroy an old 430W PSU.

He'll be fine. On my test bench I'm running 8x 12w fans, an i7 930 clocked at 4ghz, a few hdds, a pump, and a few extra things. During gaming the most I see being drawn at the wall is 360 watts, and that is without calculating my psu efficiently. On furmark/heaven and the like it doesn't break 400w.

I have a 470 running in a budget gaming pc down stairs and that thing has a g530 celeron and a 380w psu. It runs like butter with even a 100mhz overclock on the 470.

I was thinking of upgrading the PS anyway. If I purchased a GTX 460 or the 6850 I would upgrade the PS if the current doesn't work. It's only powering the MB and 1 additional case fan plus CD/dvd.
If I could get a GTX 460 for $90, I'd just replace PS and call it a day. I don't want a used card, did that and ended up with a card that did not work.

If upgrading the PSU you can look at the 470's , I recommend the 460 over the 6850. In alot of scenarios, my older overclocked 460 would run with my 470 as well. 470 is gonna be a loud hot mother with a reference cooler. IMHO its not worth it to get a 470 over a 460 for the extra money you will spend. 10-20% difference in FPS max.

I also found this card but wasn't sure about Galaxy, never used them before. It seems like a great price. Galaxy GeForce GTX 460 GC 768 MB for $90 new in box.

Is the Bstock on EVGA refurbished? It comes as card only, not extras.

I would need at least a 500w PS with a 460 card?

The dead card I bought was XFX, other cards I have owned are MSI and gigabyte. What are the better card manufacturers or which ones to avoid?

I wouldn't get that galaxy card. Even though its new it is the 192bit version with 768mb. The 1gb cards with 256bit memory are quite a bit better. The superclocked EVGA 460 should be the 256bit version.

I'd still say that he'll be fine if hes running a 470 at stock clocks, even better if hes really upgrading his psu like he is saying now.

And 10~20% gains is pretty significant. Here is my OC'ed 470 vs a stock 570. This is a card with the average market price of $125 used vs a card that is still retailing for $300 and is going into the area of a GTX 580. The 470 still trades blows with the popular 560 TI today, so comparing it to the 460 is pretty insulting.

But this is all for discussion's sake. No help to OP if hes stubborn, lol.

I'm flexible, I would rather add a few $$ then be sorry later. I'm not a hardcore that needs a $400 card. Trying to keep this a low budget but, I want something to last a few years and as long as the MB will be fine with the card I'm good. Any recommended PS?
I do appreciate the quick responses and great info.

Do you have a link for the 470? I looked and it isn't $125. Where you talking about the 460?
