i have an ati radeon 9800 pro (no oc). do i need to add ramsinks and/or get better cooling or is the stock ok?
also would this void the warranty?

Running the card without ramsinks is fine. If you do add ramsinks, and for some reason you have to RMA the card later, it is possible that ATI will claim since the card was modified, so the warranty is no longer valid. Will it provide better cooling? I'd say quite a few of the ramsinks you see is more for looks than actual cooling. There are some ramsinks out there that could help in cooling, but without any OCing, its relatively pointless.

I added some to my GF4 Ti4400. Did it help the overclock? No, but I really like the way they made the card look.

Here's some new ramsinks (they look aluminum) made by OCZ, and carried by svc.com that are bga style (to fit the Radeon line) and look very similar to the sinks found on the 9800 Pro 256 MB.

They are very reasonably priced and even come with thermal tape for those that don't want to glue them on permanently with thermal adhesive.

I ordered some today for my extremely o'ced 9700 Pro. We'll see if they make a difference.
