Video Card Questions

I'm considering buying a used video card, but two questions arose that I didn't get a clear answer from the seller: The card originally came with an external power cord, which he doesn't have...would this just be a regular molex cord, which I wouldn't need with a direct connection with the PS?

The second question is that the card has an integrated TV encoder. I'm accustomed to having a S-video connector, but I get the impression that the encoder is something more. Would it help or hurt my Hauppauge PVR150 TV tuner?

It was likely a 4 pin molex adapter cord to pci-e plug...something that allowed older PSU's at the time to plug into the newer (at the time) 6 pin pci-e plu....Most modern PSU have them or you can pick up for cheap

I have PCIe cables, but this is on an AGP card. I imagine that this is not a problem, but I don't know if they might have come up with something weird.

No I have never heard of anything special..you will be fine...it may have been just a standard molex y cable like you get with case fans so you dont tie up one of the few molex cables you get. Back in the day most PSU's only had like 4-6 of them and once the video cards started requiring an additional power plug it became and issue for some.

Seeker, you'll have to be more specific. Building/upgrading computers is really all about the specifics. We'll need to know the brand and model of the card. For instance, ATI AIW 9600XT, Sapphire AIW 9800 Pro, Powercolor AIW X800XL, eVGA 6800GT with VIVO, etc. It sounds to me like you're talking about an All In Wonder card. They used a floppy disk power connector, and always came with an adapter, that would let you use a normal molex connector to power the card, if your power supply didn't have two floppy connectors, and you had a floppy drive installed.

edit: The software doesn't have to be installed. In other words, you could just continue to use your PVR 150, and not install the software for the video capture portion of the video card.

Questions ???

If you have a PVR150
then why do you want a video card that includes TV ??

Why not use the money to get a better video card, without TV ??

I suppose that it is debatable, but I think that the 6800Gt is the best AGP card within my budget. The 7800GS is too expensive, and the 7600GS won't perform as well...I don't want an ATI. It is not a question of whether I want a TV encoder video card, I just want to know how it would effect the PVR150.
