Video Card Question

Ok so I'm thinking of picking up a GTX 460 1gb off of Newegg but I have some questions.

1. What's the deal with them pumping out new cards so soon after each other? It didn't seem long ago that the 200 series was released and now the 500 series will be here soon....wtf?

2. My LCD only supports up to 1680 x 1050 so would the 1gb version be a good choice considering the price difference between it and the 768gb is only about $20-$30?
I currently use a eVGA 8800GTS 512mb and it's been rock solid since I got it when it was released (3 years ago?). Should I expect the same kind of life span from a GTX 460?

there were no 3xx series and the 470/480 series had problems with power and heat, so they had to release a tweaked version called 570/580.

So I should just wait or is the 460 a solid card? I guess if it goes out eVGA will hook me up lol.

it's solid as long as it isn't the 460 SE, and there's no telling if/when a GTX560 is going to be released, but since the 460 doesn't have problems with heat or power the 560 is probably not going to be much faster than an overclocked 460

unless there is a really good deal on the 768mb model then you might as well go for the 1gb model as its not just the extra ram that is the difference.

btw what does the rest of your system look like?

yeah either 460 1gb or 768mb will be fine. with a dual core cpu at 1680 I would probably just get the 768mb model if it is 30 bucks cheaper. if its less than 20 bucks difference then go ahead with the 1gb model. make sure it is not the SE model though.

Ok so I pulled the trigger and ordered a eVGA GTX 460 1gb from Newegg for $179.99 + $20 MIR. It's the base model but I'm sure I could throw some AS5 on the chip and overclock it some.

So the cooler is loud? My 8800GTS has the same type cooler and it's not bad.
yes its very loud compared to the standard gtx460 cooler. they have one with the regular cooler thats the same price and even comes oced higher. it costs 5 bucks more up front and has $3.99 shipping but again after rebate it is still $159.99. so for just $3.99 more you get a much quieter cooler running faster gtx460.

EDIT
: never mind that was a 768mb model...

Civ 5: "Electronics gets faster all the time, and it gets cheaper all the time." Chips like GPU is extremely complicated that you will probably need to change the design if you are going to change a single capacitor in the AIB. Keep updating the design allows the use of the latest and greatest (meaning cheapest) parts available.

Newer cards are not more expensive than older cards when they were released. GTX 285 was somewhere around 500+ USD at release, and GTX 580 is also 500+ USD at release. 2 years later, you will probably be able to buy a card that is at least twice as fast as 580 with 500 USD.

2. My LCD only supports up to 1680 x 1050 so would the 1gb version be a good choice considering the price difference between it and the 768gb is only about $20-$30?

Same claimed that 8800GTS is haunted by "bumpgate", meaning that it will die early due to the material it was built upon. If you are able to keep what should not be able to last until now until now, then chances are, GTX 460 will be fine.

The performance of 1Gb 460 > 768mb 360 on 1680x1050 res.

Well crap, I was thinking the one I got would have been better. I don't think I can cancel the order now but I'll try.

Could you link the one you are talking about?

sorry it was actually a 768mb model. the 1gb models with the good cooler are 20 bucks more.

Lol well I'm sure the cooler will be fine. I'll just turn my speakers up more.
