I hope more people can respond to this thread to confirm this answer. I looked into buying a second XFX7900GT when I have an eVGA 7900GT and someone told me that it would work. Personally I'd wait for G80 to see how promising it looks and even if you don't want a G80 then you could get a cheaper 7900GTX. You're choice though. What resolution do you game at?

Everything I have read is that if it's the same family, SLI will work. MaxPC even groused about that a few months ago, since the same cannot be said for Crossfire.

Note that some manufacturers will likely say "for best compatibility, buy our brand again...", but that's all sales gibberish.

You can use different brand card in SLi. You can even use cards with different clock speeds (but both cards will run @ the lower speed) All you need is two of the same model card. (ie. 2x7900gt or 2x7800gtx)
As for xfire, the master card that you buy can be of any brand, then you just buy any card from that master card's series that supports xfire. For instance: you get the x1900 xfire edition master card. You then must buy either the x1900xt or the x1900xtx. In this sense, xfire is the same as SLi on the OP's topic.
