Video Card Purchase Question

OK. So, I recently got a HP a1430n and I want to get a new video card for it. The big question I have is should I buy the 7900GT, or should I wait for the new DX 10? 😕 I really don't know, and I am not rolling in the dough. I just need to know so I can play some games such as, Half Life 2, FEAR, etc.
 
I would get the 7900GT and not worry about it, because it's probably going to be quite a while before windows Vista(it's going to be required for DX10) gets the bugs worked out and it's going to take longer for DX10 to be utilized in games, so just get the 7900GT.
 
Ok, thanks for the info. I do have one more question though. I kind of need to know weather or not to get a power supply. The one that it came with is rated at 300 or so Watts, and it gives 12 Volts at 19 Amps, so yeah. Should I upgrade that as well, and if so do you know of any deals? Thanks.
 
You will need a much more powerful PSU than what came with your HP. My HP came with a 300W Delta PSU but it says "Do not exceed 268W Max".

My HP is an A1250N, same specs as you except and additional DVD-Rom and an ATI mobo not Nvidia.
 
OK, that's what I thought, but does anyone have any suggestions on which one to get? I really need to find a deal. Something that can run a 7900 GT.
 
Get X1800XT with a good >500 watts psu or higher depending upon your rig.

But X1800XT 512mb or 256mb or 1900XT.

1800XT may be able to play FEAR at 12X10 MAX no aa no af

i would hope it could do better than that, my 6800GT was doing 1280x1024 with 2xAA and i forget the AF.
 
@domo, what is your rig?

I am talking with everything on, including soft shadows, volumentric lighting and maximum physics. what is your cpu and mobo, is it 3.0HT or higher with 2gb ram?
A 6800GT can't handle more than this:
10X7 Max no soft shadows
12X10 Max no ss no volumentric lighting

This guy is a total bonehead, disregard ANYTHING he says. Ackshite, when will you realise that wattage is NOT most important when selecting a PSU? AMPS are what matter, amps on 12v rail more specifically. Do not mislead people with useless and incorrect information. To the OP, if you can, get a Tagan Whisper 480W PSU with 28amps on its 12v rail.

Also, 'may be able to play FEAR etc. etc.'? MAY?????

To the OP, this guy says it may be able to play at those settings. But he's only working on the basis of him being the person who sets it all up.

If you do it yourself, you'll probably find the 1800XT can play at much higher settings.
