Video Card Problem

My computer has been having issues for the past few months. When I turn on the computer, many times, the monitor will go directly into power save mode. Also, sometimes when I am playing games this will happen. I will then have to restart my computer to fix the problem. I thought it might be a problem with the video card. I had an Nvidia 5200. I just bought an Nvidia 7800 GS. I tried installing it today, but the same thing happened, I turned on my computer, and the monitor went to power save mode. I can't see to get into windows. Does anybody know what the problem might be?
 
That's what I forgot to mention. I hooked my monitor to a different computer and it worked fine. Could there be a problem with the motherboard? I was thinking of everything and couldnt think of much.
