Video card power

I just set up my system last night (havent had time to turn it on and start installing stuff yet) but I was curious if I can put my gf6800gt on the same cable as my optical drives and floppy.

Or, would it be better to run it's own cable from the PSU (antec 550watt)? I don't plan to read cd's and play games, but would an optical drive drain enough power from one cord?

I wanted to only use one cable for power management reasons :)

If that is a truepower PSU then it will be fine. I runa seperate cord just to be safe, but it really shouldnt matter.

That's a very weird case ... new standard? I also have the same question though, tagging along for the answer.

When the GT was reviewed, many reviewers had it on the same rail as other devices such as hard drives and opticals. They reported no problems with the card. On the other hand, they had a good namebrand power supply. You two will be fine with the one u have, but maybe others wont be.

It's a lian li v1000 - thier own special standard (not BTX) that uses an ATX mobo.

It's nice but i ran into a few problems:
a) no removable mobo tray, kind of a PAIN to get some screws in when mounting mobo
b) front case connections (audio, usb, firewire[unhooked]) go from bottom left to top right of case, if they were 2mm shorter they would not have reached. i dont like them tight (taught) so i will look at it tonight after work and see what I can do
c) psu hole for cables in case is opposite of where the wires come out of the PSU, so it barely fit with the cables zig-zagging

heres the PCs stats:

AMD 3500+
Asus A8V Deluxe wifi
Geforce 6800GT

550watt antec psu
lian li v1000 black case (nice but kinda tough to put together at points)

1gb mushkin level one pc3200 RAM (2-3-2-5)
250gb sata wd hd (7200 8mb)

52x32x52 noname cd burner (got free last night heh)
52x32x52x16 lite on cd burner / dvd rom
floppy

thanks for the info mars, i think at this point I will just run another cord up there. most of the cable will hide in the bottom part of my case anyways, so it shouldn't look too messy.

That is a Lian-Li case by the way for those who dont know. PC-V1000
Oops just noticed the model of the case was posted. Nice system and very close to what I want myself. I am still waiting to upgrade. I know I will be buying two PC-V2000 lian-li cases myself for sure. Hoping that Asus releases a two pci-e upgrade to the A8V which might happen soon for future proofing for a dual 6800GT setup down the road. Also would like a lower cost entry cpu like a 3200 instead of paying $500 for a 3500 I would rather save that money.
