Video card or motherboard?

Occasionally when I boot my computer, the display settings have reset to 800x600, 4 bit color, and it can't be changed to anything else in Display Properties. It should be set at 1024x768 32 bit color. I restart and then everything is as it should be. It doesn't do this all the time, just occasionally. This is something that has just started happening in the last few weeks after several months of trouble free use. I'm trying to determine if it's the video card going bad or something with the motherboard, or something else entirely. Here's my system specs:

Biostar M7VIG-Pro motherboard
Athlon XP 2400+ Thoroughbred-B
768 MB PC2700 ram
Thermaltake Silent PurePower 420w power supply
Maxtor 60gb and Maxtor 120gb hard drives
ProLink GeForce FX5200 128mb AGP video card (using driver 6.1.7.7 from Nvidia)
KWorld PCI TV/FM tuner card model VS-LTV883 RF
Chaintech Model AV-710 sound card
Running XP Home

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

test the video card on another machine if its possible.

Try uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them if you don't have machine to test on.

Thanks newbiepcuser. I've already uninstalled and reinstalled. It's only happened once since then. I guess I'll just live with it for now until something more definitive happens to point which component is going bad. Thanks again for your response.
