Video Card on a HDTV

Ok I just got a 31" SONY Wega and I want to plug my computer to it. I had an old computer with a video card that has an s-video output. Sounds easy enough. So I plug it in and at first I can see the bootup screen up to the Win2k bootup logo. But then it goes blank. What's up.

I thought, maybe the resolution is set too high, so I plug it back to a computer monitor and I change the video card output to 600x800. I plug it back into the TV, the same exact thing happens. Does anybody know why this is the case.

I've heard some terms like NTSC thrown around, but not really sure how that might come into play. Do I need to get a video card that has an s-video out and be "NTSC compatible" or something. If anybody knows why it worked, and then it didn't work, please let me know. I'd really like to start doing some trivial tasks on my big screen. Thanks

Do you have an HDTV or not? S-video is just a standard NTSC output. It doesn't matter what resolution you are using with s-video, because it will always be downconverted to 640x480 (or 720x480) at 60Hz interlaced for that ouput. If you s-video out isn't working right, then it's a problem with your video card drivers.

If you have a HDTV, then you should be using it just like a computer monitor...with the RGB out directly to the TV. If your HDTV only has progressive component inputs (YPrPb), then you can buy a RGB->YPrPb transcoder to convert the computer signals to those that your HDTV can display. In that case, you would be able to display 640x480 @ 60Hz non-interlaced on your set....as well as something like 960x540 @ 60Hz non-interlaced. For custom resolutions, you would need something like PStrip.

What kind of a video card are you trying to use? What drivers are you using?
If it's an Nvidia card, I know that certain drivers work better than others when trying to use tv-out. I used to get the splash screen on both monitor and tv and then when it booted up, it went into the desktop on the tv cause I had set it to tv, but the newer cards can do tv-out at the same time as the monitor; although, you said that it was an older computer that you took the card out of.

I would check that first, and you may have to set your resolution to 640x480 as well to get it to function right depending on the card's age and drivers used.
