Video Card Not Detected By Quake 2

A friend of mine has the following system:

P3-700 MHz (not overclocked)
Abit BE6 Rev. 2
128 MB PC-100 SDRAM
Creative Labs Annihilator 2 w/ Nvidia 6.50 drivers
Soundblastr Live Value
Creative Labs CD-RW (don't know which one)
Windows 98

He installed Quake 2, but the game will only run in "Software Rendering". Reading back through the console, it shows the game does not detect his video card as supporting 3D. He's uninstalled and re-installed the Nvidia drivers several times and Windows shows the video card and correct drivers in "Display Properties." We've gone through the BIOS and set everything as recommended in the "GeForce Tuning Guide" over at Tweak3D.

He originally used the Creative drivers for his video card and may not have un-installed them correctly, would a driver conflict with the Nvidia drivers prevent Quake 2 from detecting his video card?

Any help or ideas would be appreciated

Are your other OpenGL games working correctly?
Have you tried setting Quake 2 to "Default OpenGL"?
Also try updating Quake 2 to the latest version (3.20).

<< Only thing I can think of is, stop trying to play GAY2(er aka quake2) >>

what games do YOU play? something along the line of Deer Hunter or Mario Karts i suppose? now thats soemthing manly :p

see if there a dll file with opengl name in it; if u do find one try moving it to another folder and running it. cards with their unique openGL icd/wrapper create those files there and thus when you try to run it with standard OGL it gets in the way. sorry for the lack of lucidness, all play and no work made me a dumbass :Q

Quake 2 is a great game and still I play it on a regular basis. It looks absolutely gorgeous on my GF2 MX at 1024 x 768 x 32. Very sharp and very clean graphics. Plus the expansion packs only serve to make the games more interesting (I've got the Quad Damage pack).

So J105, have you got it working yet?

Actually, it's my friends computer. Yes, his Quake 2 has been updated to 3.20 and it won't accept the "Default OpenGL" setting, it always reverts back to "Software Rendering". Since he originally had Creative drivers for his card, he tried going back to them to see if that would help, but Quake 2 still doesn't recognize he has a 3D card. The Quake 3 demo does the same, it halts at the startup stating he doesn't have a 3D card. As far as I know, he doesn't h ave any other 3D games.

I've thought about installing UT on his PC to see if it will recognize his card in either D3D or OpenGL, but haven't had a chance to do it yet. I don't know if people at this forum are familiar with the "Ultimate Virtual Saltwater Aquarium" (http://www.fish-byte.com/), but it runs on his PC in D3D just fine, although a little slower on his machine than mine.

I guess, if we can't figure out what's wrong, it's time for a format and a re-install of Windows 98.

Thanks

I still play and like Quake2. Great game. Thats a strange one. Something must be screwed with his driver install. How about trying the GLsetup utility?

I think you have to remove the Opengl32.dll located within the game directory. It may be a hidden file, so you'll have to have your system show all files in order to remove it. OpenGL games use the Opengl32.dll file which resides in the C:\windows\system directory. Just to be safe, back the file up before you remove it.

Have you tried trashing the config file in the baseq2 folder?
Have you tried re-installing the game?

It sounds like you might have a system-wide OpenGL problem. My guess is you need to uninstall the old drivers correctly and reinstall the new ones.
