video card maximum board draw

last time i checked, a PCI-e x16 2.x slot can deliver a maximum of 150W to an add-in card. if that's the case, why is everyone saying that the GTX 680 have access to only 225W? shouldn't it be 300W (150W + 2 x 75W)? ditto for the HD 7970, which should have access to 375W?

or am i missing something here?

PCI Express 2.1 increased the power output from an x16 slot to 150W so that some high-performance graphics cards can be run from the slot power alone.

bummer, looks like it's only version 2.1 that have access to 150W per slot. shame that no motherboard that know of implemented it.

i distinctively remember that there was a 6850 that was sold without any PCI-e power connectors, relying on the 150W from the slots alone. i wonder how that card managed to work...

oh well, i was partially right then.
