video card locks up system

i have a p3 800e on a abit se6 using onboard video at the moment. i tried putting in a vanta 8mb tnt2 agp but everytime i do my pc won't start. once i remove the card it will work again.
whats the problem? i already checked the bios setting and i think i've got it right. i don't know what else to do.
thanks for any help anyone can give.
 
Are you disabling the onboard video when you install the new card?
Some motherboards have a jumper you have to change.
